Awards entries for 2024 are now closed

EACH gives two awards to honour talented early-career researchers in the field of healthcare communication, the Jozien Bensing Research Award and outstanding teachers of communication in healthcare (the EACH Teaching Award).

These awards are presented to the winners every two years at the EACH hosted International Conference on Communication in Healthcare (ICCH) which this year is being held in Zaragoza, Spain from the 9-13 September 2024.

The EACH Teaching Award

The EACH Teaching Award is an innovative prize for teachers of health care communication awarded biennially at the conferences of the International Conference on Communication in Healthcare (ICCH). The award was first given in 2016.

The award is aimed at teachers of communication in healthcare who have made a significant and outstanding contribution to healthcare communication education.

Examples of such contributions could include:

  • making an impact on healthcare communication teaching beyond the candidate’s institution
  • creating an innovation in healthcare communication teaching and learning
  • introducing communication training in a particularly challenging environment

Nominations can be sent by candidates themselves or by their colleagues with the candidates’ agreement. Nominators should be members of EACH. On acceptance of the award, the winner should be a member of EACH.

The Teaching Award winner will receive the following prize*:

  • Free ICCH conference attendance either in person or online for the conference at which the award is made.
  • Two years EACH Membership for free (existing members will receive two years from the point of next renewal).*The prize of free conference registration and two years EACH membership is not transferable, cannot be exchanged for cash or any other goods or services, and is, in the case where the recipient is entitled to alternative free registration, limited to one free registration per award winner per conference.

The nomination should consist of:

  • An up-to-date CV of the nominee.
  • A description by the nominee of the healthcare communication programme through which they have made a significant and outstanding contribution to health care communication: nominees should provide an example of teaching materials that they are particularly proud of.
  • Two letters of recommendation by senior colleagues or others, which describe the accomplishments of the nominee and explore how the nominee fulfils the criteria for the award in the field of health care communication teaching.

The jury for the award consists of members of the EACH teaching committee (tEACH), national representatives and the former recipient of the award and is chaired by Eva Doherty, Co-Chair of tEACH. The jury welcome applications and will look for credible evidence and recognition from others in making this award such as:

  • evaluations from participants in the healthcare education program
  • evidence of a sustained impact of the teaching programme

The EACH Jozien Bensing Research Award

The Jozien Bensing Research Award is an award for talented early-career researchers awarded biennially at the conferences of the International Conference on Communication in Healthcare (ICCH). The award was first given in 2008.

The award is meant for researchers in the first ten years of their research career, for example within ten years of PhD or similar qualification, allowing for career breaks.

Consideration will be given to:

  • the number of publications
  • number of publications as first author
  • the period in which articles were published
  • impact factor of the journals

Nominations can be sent by candidates themselves or by senior colleagues with the candidates’ agreement.  Nominators should be members of EACH.  On acceptance of the award, the winner should be a member of EACH.

The Jozien Bensing Research Award winner will receive the following prize*:

  • Free ICCH conference attendance either in person or online for the conference at which the award is made.
  • Two years EACH Membership for free (existing members will receive two years from the point of next renewal).*The prize of free conference registration and two years EACH membership is not transferable, cannot be exchanged for cash or any other goods or services, and is, in the case where the recipient is entitled to alternative free registration, limited to one free registration per award winner per conference.

The nomination should consist of:

  • An up-to-date CV of the nominee, including a list of publications.
  • A copy of the favourite publication by the nominee (in the eyes of the nominee him/herself).
  • Two letters of recommendation by senior colleagues or others, which describe the accomplishments of the candidate and make clear why this nominee is particularly promising and talented in the field of healthcare communication research.

The jury of the award includes former and current Presidents of EACH, the Editor-in-chief of Patient Education & Counseling and former recipients of the award and is chaired by Evelyn Watson, Chair of rEACH.

The jury welcome applications and will look for credible evidence and recognition from others in making this award.
