In many countries nursing is a profession where a variety of ethnicities are represented. We see nurses travel for employment and better work conditions and in nursing education we experience a diversity of backgrounds in the classroom.
As we experience a wider diversity among patients in our healthcare system this tendency is positive. Ethnic inequality in health is a proven fact and a wider diversity among healthcare professionals can make a difference on an individual and an institutional level when patients with different background meet the healthcare system to get help.
A research project was conducted in a Danish program for nursing and midwifery education. The project was aimed at describing barriers and opportunities for ethnic minority students to succeed in nursing and midwifery education.
The results from the project will be presented and we will try to start a discussion on ethnic diversity in nursing education and practice in different parts of the world with focus on how ethnic diversity is represented in nursing and midwifery and the effect on patient communication and patient care.
