Kurze Biografie:

My research focuses on communication processes in the organization of health with a focus on examining how different stakeholders use micro and macro communicative practices to make sense of health issues and how these communicative practices inform practices of health. This focus allows me to explore difficult conversations (communication about adverse events; end-of-life discussions) or common communication events (doorknob disclosures). This agenda intersects health communication, health services research, interpersonal communication, and organizational communication. These questions allow me to examine macro-level communication by healthcare organizations as well as micro-level interpersonal interactions between patients and providers. I am trained in quantitative (survey and content analysis), qualitative (interview focus groups, ethnography, texts), and rhetorical (close reading, rhetorical criticism) methods. I often turn to other disciplines, such medicine, sociology, and healthcare services to foster a more interdisciplinary approach to my research, with an eye to connect communication and social medicine. I hold a bachelors and Masters in Communication Studies and a doctorate in Health Communication with cognates in Organizational Communication and Communication Education & Pedagogy. Before my appointment at Mayo Clinic, I was a university professor, teaching course in health communication, research methods, and organizational communication.
