Breaking Bad News – Online Workshop

Led by experienced trainers from tEACH, the teaching committee from EACH: International Association for Communication in Healthcare, this experiential and highly interactive workshop is aimed at health care professionals who have these important interactions with patients, patient’s family/friends and colleagues.
Workshop content focuses on challenges reported by clinicians when breaking bad news including:
- individual challenges identified by the group
- delivering the message in different contexts and environments
- dealing with situations when sensitiveresults are made available to the patient via the patient electronic medical record (EMR) or App, before the clinician
- recognising and management of the impact on self.
In addition to reflecting on and practicing core skills for breaking bad news, participants will explore and practice more advanced skills to to enable clinicians, and therefore patients, to manage concepts of risk and uncertainty in medicine.
What to expect
This 3.5 hour online, highly experiential workshop involves pre workshop preparation in the form of reading and a reflective exercise. On the day there will be a brief didactic presentation, discussion and reflection on pre-recorded videos. Most of the time will be dedicated to role play practice with an experienced medical role player. Each participant will have the opportunity to practice and receive feedback from peers, simulated patients and facilitators.
Each group of 6 participants will be facilitated by a tEACH trainer with an experienced medical role player
