“Lost (and found!) in translation: A case study in med improv workshop design”

Brittany Batell, MPH MSW CHES

Health education and communications is a field Bethany came to as a result of many different avenues and areas of interest. Her background is a hodgepodge of literature, theatre, anthropology, psychology, public health, social work, and education; out of these she learned the value of communication, connection, and expression in cultivating change and making meaning out of our experiences.

She is inspired by theory and research, and is grounded in practice. She is passionate to develop and implement programs around healthcare access and equity that bridge the disconnect between health knowledge and the motivations, skills, and behaviours that result in its effective application in people’s lives and relationships. To make a true impact, these program interventions must be considered through an intersectional lens. It is Bethany’s mission to create and foster brave and supportive spaces where individuals can engage with and explore their questions, concerns, identities, and experiences. Through innovative practice methods and empathic teaching relationships, she believes we can foster the awareness and open mindedness necessary to counteract the negative attitudes, stigma, and ignorance that feed into current health inequities.
