Healthcare interaction is complex, and obtaining a full grasp on patient-healthcare professional dynamics is challenging.

Systematic Coding of Observed human Behavior (SCOBe) is a research method used to unpack complex interaction and disentangle specific communication behaviours. This enables a systematic assessment of behaviours, such as patients’ question asking or emotional cues, and clinicians’ information provision or efforts to involve patients in decision making.

This one and a half day course is developed to help researchers and other professionals in using SCOBe to analyze communication in clinical interaction.

Objetivos del Curso

The course will enable participants to:

  • decide when (and when not) to use SCOBe
  • familiarize with and select appropriate coding systems
  • apply a coding system through hands-on practice
  • modify or newly develop existing coding systems if necessary
  • analizar e interpretar datos
  • adequately report on research using SCOBE
  • avoid common pitfalls when using SCOBe

This interactive course consists of plenary lectures, practical assignments in small groups and individually, and individualized feedback on participants’ research plans. Participants will leave the course feeling more confident about when and how to apply SCOBe in their own research.

COURSE FACILITATORS

Janneke Noordman, PhD Nivel, Instituto Holandés de Investigación sobre Servicios de Salud, Países Bajos.

Janneke is an expert in observational coding and trained many researchers in this methodology. She also provides video-feedback to healthcare providers. She investigates patient-provider communication, with a focus on participatory research and patient groups in vulnerable situations (e.g. patient with limited health literacy, elderly). Janneke is the secretary of the Patient-Provider-Interaction (PPI) Network in The Netherlands and Flanders.

Marij Hillen, PhD Amsterdam University Medical Centers, The Netherlands.

Marij studies clinician-patient communication with a focus on patient trust and on (communication about) uncertainty. She frequently uses SCOBe, in addition to qualitative, survey, and experimental methods. In her research, she has developed and used observational coding to assess communication within second opinion consultations, shared decision-making, and communication about uncertainty.

As co-chair of the research committee of EACH, she has developed an online database of coding instruments for physician-patient communication. Additionally, she published a reporting guideline for SCOBe as well as a systematic review of existing coding systems.

Course Fees:  EACH Member £390 / Non-Member £430
