SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Workplace-based communication skills teaching and learni
 ng
DESCRIPTION:Due to the Corona virus outbreak\, this course has been postpon
ed.\n\ntEACH\, the teaching committee of the EACH: International  Associa
tion of Communication in Healthcare\, is delighted to announce a two-day c
ourse focusing on teaching communication skills in the clinical workplace.
\n\nIt will be facilitated by experienced teachers from the tEACH Courses
and Support for Trainers committee. The proceedings will be held in Englis
h and as much as possible will accommodate participants for whom English i
s not their first language.\nContent and format\nThe primary focus of this
course will be on approaches to incorporating teaching about communicatio
n into the clinical workplace\, such as in clinics and on hospital wards w
here learners participate in patient care. While teaching communication sk
ills during clinical training is important in order to reinforce communica
tion skills learned in formal courses and develop new skills\, clinical su
pervisors can find this task challenging to accomplish.  This course will
explore “informal” clinical communication teaching opportunities such
as role modeling\, observation and responding to patient presentations as
well as more formal one to one and small group approaches such as video r
eview\, role play and reflection using learners’ immediate clinical expe
riences.\n\nThe course will be highly interactive and participant centred\
, with a mixture of experiential learning and didactic teaching:\n\n Part
icipants will share their experiences and concerns regarding opportunities
\, strategies and challenges for communication teaching in the clinical se
tting and/or training and empowering clinical supervisors to emphasize com
munication skills during clinical teaching.\n Participants will also have
the opportunity to practice and share a variety of approaches to clinical
teaching of communication skills using materials such as role play\, clin
ical vignettes and trainee videos.\n Group problem solving will seek to a
ddress obstacles that participants face in attempting to emphasize communi
cation skills during clinical training.\n All participants will be given
the opportunity to identify how insights from the course can be practicall
y implemented in their specific institutional setting and what they percei
ve as the most important take home points from the course.\n\nCourse Objec
tives:\n\n To describe challenges and obstacles to teaching communication
skills in clinical context\n To use teachable moments in a busy clinical
environment\n To provide feedback to learners in an effective and effici
ent manner\n Identify a variety of formal communication teaching strategi
es that can fit into the clinical context\n\nParticipants\nThe course is d
irected towards teachers of health professionals (for example medical stud
ents\, nurses\, physiotherapists\, doctors) who are engaged in clinical su
pervision of learners as well as educators involved in supporting clinical
training. It is suitable for teachers of a variety of experience.\n\nThe
maximum number of participants is 18.\nRecommended Hotel\nRuby Sofie Hotel
  Vienna\, Marxergasse 17\, 1030 Wien\n\nVery good value 4* hotel located j
ust under a 15-minute walk from Gesundheit Österreich (Stubenring 6\, 101
0 Wien).  Members receive preferential rates so I would recommend that y
ou click here to register on the Ruby Hotels website before booking.  You
will be asked to enter your name and email address\, and select a passwor
d.\n\nOnce you have registered\, you can return to the Ruby Hotels homepag
e\, and under ‘Book Your Room’ select the Ruby Sofie Hotel Vienna.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED: PREACH\; Person-centered Research in Communication in He
 althcare
DESCRIPTION:Due to the Corona virus outbreak\, this course has been postpon
ed.\n\nHow you investigate interpersonal communication in healthcare is la
rgely determined by what lens you are looking through. This lens is shaped
by the research methods and observation schemes you use\, by your persona
l experiences with communication and also by your ideas about what constit
utes high quality communication. In addition to how to formulate your comm
unication research question and what research methods work best to answer
various research questions\, this PREACH course will also teach you how to
become more conscious of all these aspects\; this will increase both the
quality of your research and the joy it brings.\n\nWho Should Attend\n\nTh
e course is directed towards early career researchers in communication in
healthcare\, advanced researchers without experience in communication rese
 arch\, and healthcare professionals (eg physicians\, nurses\, pharmacists\
, physiotherapists) with an interest in communication research.\n\n“PREA
CH” Course\n\nThis two day\, non-residential course will be highly inter
active\, learner-centred and experiential. It will be facilitated by resea
rchers with many years of experience in investigating communication in hea
lthcare from different angles. After the course\, these facilitators also
offer individual\, one hour booster sessions per month for six months to f
acilitate the transfer of what you have learned to your own research.\n\nT
he course will be held in English and as much as possible will accommodate
participants for whom English is not their first language.\n\nThe focus w
ill be on how to investigate communication in healthcare in a ‘person-ce
ntered[1] way’. As a result of this course\, participants will be able
to apply:\n\nKnowledge in the forefront of:\n\n what methods are availab
le for conducting research in communication in healthcare\n what type of
research in communication in healthcare is appropriate for answering what
type of research question\n how theories of person-centeredness have rele
vance for doing communication research\n\nSkills:\n\n ability to situate
and ground own research project in theories of ‘person-centered’ commu

DESCRIPTION:Who Should Attend\nThe course is directed towards teachers of h
ealth professionals (for example medical students\, nurses\, physiotherapi
sts\, doctors) who wish to explore the underlying skills and structure of
health care interactions. It is suitable for teachers of a variety of expe
rience and is particularly suitable for those early on in the teaching car
eers.\n“What to Teach” Course\nThe “what to teach” course will be
highly interactive and participant centred. It will be facilitated by expe
rienced teachers from the teaching committee of EACH\, International Asso
ciation of Communication in Healthcare. The proceedings will be held in En
glish and as much as possible will accommodate participants for whom Engli
sh is not their first language.\n\nThe primary focus of this two day\, non
-residential course will be on the structure and skills of health-care com
munication. The course will look at the various models in use to conceptua
lise health care communication and how to utilise these to analyse communi
cation skills in observed encounters with patients. This will help partici
pants clarify what they are trying to teach and learn\, define the individ
ual specific skills of communication and break down the complex task of th
e interview into its individual components. The course will be a mixture o
f experiential learning and didactic teaching. We will explore communicati
on skills by observing prepared videos and also work in small groups with
simulated patients to recreate situations where we can analyse communicati
on skills within a teaching session. Participants will be expected to inte
rview simulated patients during the course in order to create encounters f
 or analysis and practice.

SUMMARY:Teach-the-teacher workshop: 'Complex intercultural communication'
DESCRIPTION:About 5% of the European population report symptoms for which t
he doctor cannot find a medical cause that sufficiently explains their sym
ptoms\, even after adequate medical examinations. These Medically Unexplai
ned Symptoms (MUS) represent 20-40% of the caseload of doctors and are one
of the most expensive diagnostic categories in Europe.\n\nThe crucial cha
llenges in MUS intercultural doctor-patient communication are differences
in perspectives\, values and beliefs about illness. MUS as well as intercu
ltural doctor-patient communication (IC) does not get enough emphasis in u
ndergraduate and postgraduate medical teaching in European countries despi
te the burden of the problem in healthcare.\n\nIn a joined strategic partn
ership between the Erasmus MC University Hospital Rotterdam (NL)\, the Uni
versity Hospital Gent (B)\, the University of Szeged (H) and associated pa
rtner (t) EACH we address these challenges in a teach-the-teacher workshop
on 7/8 September 2020 in Budapest.\n\nPatient-centered communication inte
rventions on functional disorders and health problems among migrants and r
efugees will be covered in the program\, by applying various educational f
ormats and training methods for the approach of MUS.\n\nThe workshop will
be highly interactive and teacher-centered\, valuing participants expertis

SUMMARY:What to Teach in Communication Skills Teaching: Skills and Structur
 e (2/2)
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to announce a two-module online course focusin
g on "What to teach" in communication skills teaching.  The course is dir
ected towards teachers of health professionals (for example teachers of st
udents and clinicians in medicine\, nursing\, physiotherapy\, etc.)  who
wish to explore the foundational skills and structure of health care inte
ractions.\n\nIt is suitable for teachers of a variety of experience and is
particularly suitable for those early on in the teaching careers.\n\nThis
is a shorter online version of our two-day annual ‘What to teach’ cou
rse that will focus on the basic core clinical communication skills rather
than specific communication challenges. The primary focus of this course
will be on the structure and skills of healthcare communication. The cours
e will look at the various models in use to conceptualise health care comm
unication and analyse communication skills in observed encounters with pat
ients. This will help participants:\n\n clarify what they are trying to t
each\n define the individual specific skills of effective clinical commun
ication\n break down the complex task of the interview into its individua
l components\n\nWe will explore communication skills by observing prepared
videos and work in small groups/break out rooms.\n\nThe online course wil
l be facilitated by experienced teachers from tEACH\, the teaching committ
ee of EACH: International Association of Communication in Healthcare. The
proceedings will be held in English and as much as possible will accommoda
te participants for whom English is not their first language.\n\nPlease no
te\, this course is not about online facilitation skills but rather the
content of what should be included in any communication teaching sessions.
 \nFacilitators\nJane Ege Møller\nDepartment of Clinical Medicine\, Aarhus
  University\, Denmark\nJane Ege Møller\, PhD\, is Associate Professor at
Department of Clinical Medicine\, Aarhus University in Denmark and the Aca
demic Manager of the clinical communication skills courses for residents i
n Central Denmark Region. She is currently the co-chair of tEACH\, the tea
ching committee of EACH.\n\nShe has done several training and research pro
jects on workplace based communication training\, and has more than 15 yea
rs of experience in the field of clinical communication and medical educat
 ion.\n\nAnnegrethe Nielsen\nUniversity College Copenhagen\, Denmark\nAnneg
rethe Nielsen\, Ph.D\, is a senior lecturer at the nursing department at U
niversity College Copenhagen. She has been teaching communication skills t
o students and professionals of a variety of healthcare professions for mo
re than 20 years and is a member of the teaching committee of EACH. She is
especially interested in the skills of shared decision making and how to
teach and implement the skills in professional practice.\n\nAnna Sonkin\nA
nna Sonkin is a pediatrician\, palliative care physician and medical educa
tor based in Moscow\, Russia. Born in the USA into a Russian family\, she
moved with her parents back to their native Moscow in 1991\, soon after th
e fall of the Soviet Union. She studied Medicine and completed residency i
n General Pediatrics in Moscow.\n\nHer interest in clinical communication
skills training\, which was almost nonexistent in Russia\, started during
a 2-year postgraduate program in Palliative Medicine in Cardiff University
\, UK. Later\, she attended the EACH train-the-trainer courses and in 2015
became a member of tEACH. She now runs a small private company that she o
wns which provides communication skills training for medical professionals
in Russia and other russian-speaking countries and also aims to raise awa
reness about the need for such training to be incorporated into all medica
l education and assessment. She keeps a blog and is working on a podcast a
 bout medical communication.

SUMMARY:Nursing SIG webinar - Communicating with emotional competence\, usi
 ng the iCARE-Haaland model.
DESCRIPTION:Ane Haaland has volunteered to present some of her work for us.
Thus we invite you to a presentation and discussion on communicating with
emotional competence\, using the iCARE-Haaland model. \n\nAne Haaland is
inviting you to build up your own experiences with using the methods whic
h she will introduce and discuss with you\, before the session.\n\nShe is
asking you to observe ("In Action") how you communicate and how emotions i
nfluence how you communicate\, and to reflect ("On Action") about what you
discover - in a systematic and guided way. This you will do by carrying o
ut weekly tasks where you are observing a small part of your communication
every week\, to discover your own patterns. It takes no more than 5-10 mi
nutes every day.\n\nThe first task is attached ("How do you listen?")\, an
d at the end of this is an overview of the tasks available for this model.
Also attached is an introduction to how to carry out this special form of
observation - to observe "In Action" - which most people are not familiar
with. (In education context\, observation "On Action" is the common metho
d used.) The best way to learn is to write down a couple of examples (ever
y week\, when you have the time) from situations where you get those preci
ous "AhAAAA!" moments - insights where you discover how your own communica
tion affects others.\n\nThe focus in Ane's presentation will be on the sk
ills used to practice emotional competence\, and how to best learn these.
(Doing the tasks beforehand will give you a much deeper understanding of t
he methods\, and are essential if you e.g. want to use these in your own t
eaching.)  She will give information about the iCARE-Haaland model (see a
ttched document with links)\, and discuss with you experiences you have h
ad during this period. We are going to work on the learning tools to enabl
e you to continue to learn on your own - as it takes time end effort to le
arn these methods well.\n\nWhy should you choose to invest time in doing t
his? Research clearly shows that health personnel has a much higher risk o
f experiencing burnout (50-80%)\, than the rest of the population. It also
shows that health personnel with emotional competence is in less danger o
f burning out\, according to a systematic review (which we will discuss).
There are several other good reasons - please see the introductory chapter
s in the iCARE-Haaland model\, which can be found on the website.\n\nThe m
eeting will be held on Zoom:\n\nhttps://kpdk.zoom.us/j/5187247328?pwd=T0kw

DESCRIPTION:Using conversation analysis to examine decision-making in conve

clinical empathy\, specifically to harness its benefits in medical setting
s.\n\nAndy Ward works at Leicester Medical School where he leads a large m

Despite being a cornerstone of patient-centred care\, there is increasing
concern that empathy is not being sufficiently demonstrated by healthcare
professionals. It is vital that healthcare education enables professionals
to develop empathy for patients throughout their career.\n\nInitially dev

Aarhus and Leicester has been conducted to assess their impact on empathy
in medical students and professionals following their introduction in medi

2015\, Myriam Deveugele wrote: “communication has been and still is use

like to share with participants what I see when I look at certain problem

as a multi-faceted and fascinating dimension that can be described and di
sentangled.\n\nSarah Bigi received her PhD in Linguistics from Catholic Un

ofessionals do not set out to make errors in patient care but despite our
best efforts sometimes errors do occur. Increasingly patients and their fa
milies are being encouraged to speak up and voice their concerns. Whilst m
any hospitals have dedicated staff to deal with formal ‘complaints' trai
ning in communication skills are still required for clinicians to feel con
fident to manage face to face meetings with patients or families in often
emotional circumstances.\n\nIn this one-hour session we are going to explo
re the emotions at play in such face-face meetings and provide strategies
to negotiate high intensity situations in complaints. We will use breakout
rooms to discuss a real-life case and develop learning outcomes for futur
e teaching. We look forward to having you join us!\n\nFacilitator - Profes
sor Peter Gillen\n\nPeter Gillen is an Associate professor of surgery at t
he Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He is a retired general surgeon w
ith a special interest in surgical education. Peter has been Clinical Advi
sor to the National Healthcare Communication Programme in Ireland since 20
 19. This programme was set up in response to the National Patient Experien
ce survey in 2018 which highlighted communication deficits among healthcar
e workers as a major cause of concern. The programme targets specific area
s of communication and is delivered over four modules of training.\n\nThe
session will take place on Zoom. To book your place\, register above:\n\nA
fter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing inform
ation about joining the meeting\n\nThis event is part of a monthly series
organised by tEACH - the teaching subcommittee of EACH.
