SUMMARY:ICCH Pre-Conference Course: Observational coding of healthcare comm
 unication: unpacking the patient-provider interactions
DESCRIPTION:The health provider-patient interaction is complex for research
ers to deeply understand the communication dynamics to address person-cent
ered care. To unpack such complex interaction and disentangle specific com
munication behaviours\, observational coding can be used. Several observer
-based coding schemes have been developed and are available. However\, it
may seem daunting to decide when observational coding is useful\, how to s
elect or adapt the appropriate coding scheme\, and/or how to use it proper
ly to answer your research questions. This course is developed to help res
earchers or professionals in using observational coding for their research
.\nCourse Objectives\nThe primary focus of the course will be on coding co
mmunication behaviours in medical consultations. The course will enable pa
rticipants to:\n\n decide when (and when not) to use observational coding
\n describe different coding schemes and to be able to choose the appropr
iate scheme for answering their own research question(s)\n apply a coding
scheme through hands-on practice\n analyze and interpret data\n avoid c
ommon pitfalls during observational coding.\n\nPlease note: This course do
es not include discourse analysis or conversation analysis as coding metho
 ds.\nFacilitators\nJanneke Noordman\, PhD\; Senior Researcher ‘Communica
tion in healthcare’\; Nivel\, Netherlands Institute for Health Services
Research\, The Netherlands. Her research interests are person-centered car
e\, participatory research and patient-provider communication with a focus
on vulnerable patient groups (e.g. patient with limited health literacy\,
elderly and patients with psycho-social problems). She is an expert in ob
servational coding and trained many students and researchers in this resea
rch methodology\, and provides video-feedback to healthcare providers base
d on their real-life consultations. Janneke is the secretary of the Patien
t-Provider-Interaction (PPI) Network in The Netherlands and Flanders.\n\n&
 nbsp\;\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nMarij Hillen\, PhD\; Assistant Professor
‘Medical Communication’ &amp\; Principal Educator\; Amsterdam Universi
ty Medical Centers\, The Netherlands. Marij researches physician-patient c
ommunication\, with a focus on patient trust and on (communication about)
uncertainty. As co-chair of the research committee of EACH\, she has devel
oped an online database of coding instruments for physician-patient commun
ication. In her research\, she has developed and used observational coding
to assess communication within second opinion consultations\, and communi
cation about uncertainty.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n\nCalum McHale - Lecturer and Co-D
irector of MSc Health Psychology\, University of St Andrews\nFees\nMember

ace prior to ICCH 2022\, in Glasgow\, Scotland.  Registration will open s
hortly.  Maximum number of participants is 16.\nTimings\n5 September 11:0
