SUMMARY:How to Maximise the Impact of Working with Simulated Patients in Co
 mmunication Skills Teaching (Online Course)
DESCRIPTION:Simulated patients (SPs)\, also referred to as actors or role p
layers\, are a significant investment in healthcare education and when use
d skilfully\, they can transform communication skills teaching\, impacting
learners’ confidence\, ability and future practice.\n\nThis highly prac
tical 3.5-hour online course is designed for healthcare communication teac
hers who want to maximise the educational value of working with SPs in sma
 ll-group teaching. Participants will explore evidence-based strategies\, t
eaching techniques\, and facilitation skills that enhance realism\, deepen
learner engagement\, and ensure SP time is used efficiently and effective
ly.\n\nThe course focuses on what teachers can do before\, during\, and af
ter SP encounters to optimise learning\, feedback quality\, and learner co
 nfidence—without increasing cost or complexity.\n\nWorkshop focus\n\nThi
s workshop explores how communication-skills teachers can maximise the edu
cational value of simulated patients (SPs) during experiential teaching.\n
\nLearning Objectives\nBy the end of this workshop\, participants will be
able to:\n\n Facilitate small-group sessions that maximise learner partic
ipation and psychological safety\n Identify and effectively manage common
challenges that arise during SP role-play\n Use Agenda-Led Outcomes-Base
d Analysis (ALOBA) to set an appropriate level of challenge while maintain
ing flexibility within SP role-play\n Demonstrate how to calibrate the le
vel of emotional intensity in a role-play to meet learners’ individual n
 eeds\n Guide SPs to deliver specific\, descriptive\, and learner-focused
feedback\n Intervene skilfully during SP encounters to enhance learning w
ithout disrupting realism\n\nTeaching Methods\nThis workshop will use a hi
ghly interactive approach\, with participants actively exploring many of t
he techniques used in effective SP-based teaching. It will aim to model be
st practice in experiential learning and\, allowing participants to both e
xperience and critically examine strategies throughout.\n\nMethods will in
clude:\n\n Brief targeted teaching inputs to introduce key concepts and f
rameworks\n Observation and analysis of simulated patient encounters\n F
acilitated small-group discussion and reflection\n Skills practice focuse
 d on facilitation\, intervention\, and feedback\n Use of real-world examp
les drawn from participants’ own teaching context\n\nFacilitators:\n\nMa
rcy Rosenbaum\, PhD\, is Professor of Family Medicine at the University of
Iowa Carver College of Medicine in the US. She is the former President of
EACH and former co-chair of tEACH\, the teaching committee of EACH. She h
as conducted research on and taught about clinical communication and medic
al education for over 30 years with a particular emphasis on experiential
simulation and workplace based communication learning.\n\n[caption id="att

and postgraduate level\, for more than 20 years. Sandra is is former Co-C

. Kim Taylor’s work as a simulated patient in the field of Clinical Comm
unication Skills training has led to workshops and courses with doctors an
d healthcare professionals throughout the UK and internationally from Norw
ay to USA\, throughout Europe to South Africa. At undergraduate level\, Ki

f Cambridge and has recently consulted on several projects for the Univers
ity including simulated patient training and a review of the SP recruitmen
t process. With a special interest in the development of training material
s\, Kim has devised and delivered simulated patient training in the UK\, P
 ortugal\, Austria\, Russia and Sri Lanka.\n\n\n\nCost - Members £120  No
