SUMMARY:HCER SIG Webinar Series: Improving clinical communication for peopl
 e with persistent physical symptoms
DESCRIPTION:Webinar content\n\nAlmost 20 years ago Peter Salmon called for
a "curriculum of explanation" in relation to the problem of "medically une
xplained" symptoms. Since then\, there have been developments in the scien
ce underpinning symptoms alongside evidence of how explanations work and h
ow they can be effectively used. This webinar will look at how persistent
physical symptoms can be usefully explained\, what that means for clinical
communication and education\, and ask "are we closer to a curriculum of e
xplanation"?\n\nThe talk builds on a paper published in PEC. The main pap
er has also just been published in The Lancet.\n\nProfessor Chris Burton\n
\nChris Burton is Professor of Primary Medical Care at the University of S
heffield. His main research and clinical interest is in persistent physica
l symptoms but his work extends to broader issues around the intersection
of physical and mental health. His work focuses on the interpersonal aspec
ts of care including involving the processes of diagnosis\, explanation an
d reassurance.  Chris recently led Multiple Symptoms Study 3\, a large tr
ial of an extended role GP consultation intervention for persistent physic
al symptoms. Chris worked for many years as a GP in a rural former coal-mi
ning community in the SouthWest of Scotland. He completed his doctorate at
the University of Edinburgh and was a Senior Lecturer in Primary Care at
the University of Aberdeen before moving to Sheffield in 2017.\n\nhttps://

Nagel MBChB (Hons)\, MRCGP\, MEd\n\nCatie Nagel is a General Practitioner
with a background in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education sin
ce 2010.  She is a GP partner and trainer and has previously worked as a
Course Director and Year Lead at the University of Leeds.  She has comple
ted an NIHR funded In Practice Fellowship at the University of Sheffield\,
supervised by Professor Chris Burton.  Her research interests are in tea
ching Persistent Physical Symptoms and measuring the effectiveness of clin
 ical education.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nThe presentation will
be followed by Q&amp\;A\n\nTime shown is BST. CEST 1pm - 2pm
