SUMMARY:Getting Your Voice Heard - Evidence-based Approaches to Negotiating
with Institutional and Government Powerbrokers and Policy Makers
DESCRIPTION:This half-day interactive and experiential course will explore
principles of effective negotiation and communication skills in articulati
ng what you most need and in influencing change in policy/practice at all
levels.\n\npEACH is the policy and practice subcommittee of EACH. pEACH ca
n support the work of researchers and educators by encouraging the transla
tion of research into policy and  practice and supporting the development
of submissions to facilitate policy impact at local and international lev
 els.\n\nEven without realising it\, as educators\, researchers\, and clini
cians\, so many of us have an opportunity to influence policy/practice or
advocate for the consideration of healthcare communication at a range of l
evels.\n\nThis course is designed for educators\, researchers\, practicing
clinicians and health care providers\, as well as health professional lea
rners at all levels (students/postgraduate learners) who wish to develop s
kills to achieve desired outcomes while enhancing relationships with polic
y makers and key decision-makers. The focus is on influencing policies/pra
ctices focused on clinical communication skills. The course combines large
group interactive sessions\, featuring evidence-informed guidance and con
crete steps for developing effective strategies with small group sessions
where participants work on their individual real-world issues and develop
plans of action.\n\nThis course will explore principles of effective commu
nication/negotiation at all levels.\n\nWe will discuss and engage in pract
ical activities designed to build skills in negotiation/communication in c
ontext such as:\n\n Negotiating between accrediting bodies and medical sc
hools.\n Working with educators/researchers and their institutions to sec
ure how to support for your success in curriculum a or program development
 /implementation/delivery\, research\, funding\, or promotion and more.\n
Influencing healthcare providers to adopt best practice guidelines\; and\n
Shaping affect higher levels of policy to influence healthcare instituti
ons and systems\, funders and related stakeholders\, etc.\n\nResearch show
s that most patients around the world do not get humanistic\, patient-cent
ric\, and empathic care resulting in poor outcomes with high disease burde
n and low satisfaction scores despite the availability of very effective t
herapies and technologies. Members of EACH have contributed substantially
to the literature that demonstrates how the absence of effective communica
tion has contributed to this deficit. pEACH (Policy &amp\; Practice Commit
tee of EACH) is committed to supporting the implementation of research fin
dings into effective\, evidence-based practice\, as well as influencing po
licymakers to develop and uphold humanistic medical practice policies.\n\n
Influencing policy and practice is challenging\, requiring motivation and
skill to effect change. pEACH is determined to educate our members on effe
 ctive\, efficient\, and evidence-based communication skills\, and to provi
de ready to use resources to engage policymakers and other key health stak
eholders to build a system that can serve the needs of our patients.\n\nGr
eat communicators are great negotiators\; they resolve seemingly intractab
le disputes and enhance working relationships. Their negotiation/communica
tion skills determine their effectiveness as communicators and influencers
of policy. EACH members are often involved in communication and negotiati
on with an array of stakeholders\, including healthcare system bosses / go
 verning boards / C-suites / accrediting bodies / patients / end-users / go
vernment / health plans / insurance companies / EMR vendors / pharmaceutic
al companies and many more.\n\nThe ability to negotiate requires a collect
ion of interpersonal and communication skills used together to bring about
a desired result. It is based on exploring underlying interests and posit
ions to bring parties together in a constructive way. Effective negotiator
s use innovative thinking to create lasting value and forge strong profess
ional relationships. They take a deep dive into the motivations and influe
nces behind differing perspectives to better understand and tackle challen
ges and disagreements.\n\nThis half-day highly interactive session\, provi
des evidence/data-based tools/interventions and strategies for identifying
individual communication preferences\, delivery methods\, and approaches
to conflict resolution. Participants will have opportunities to discover\,
learn and practice a range of negotiation skills/tools and techniques. Th
e session will also include case-studies\, findings from the literature\,
needs assessment data\, and practical conflict management tools that are u
seful in negotiation. Evidence-based interventions and tools will be discu
ssed &amp\; practiced.\n\nThe course will be held in English and as much a
s possible will accommodate participants for whom English is not their fir
st language. We recognise that institutions in different countries will ha
ve varying resources\, power structures and policy differences. This cours
e is designed to take this into account\, and we will support you in devis
ing strategies tailored to your specific context.  The course will be hig
hly interactive and participant centered\, enabling individual participant
s to formulate concrete plans for the future to help them achieve success
and enhance their professional satisfaction &amp\; wellbeing.\n\nThe sessi
on will feature dynamic small group discussions and role-play activities.
Participants will work collaboratively through posed challenges using grou
p ‘problem-solving’ activities\, to ensure that they develop practical
strategies that address the needs and expectations of our policymakers\,
 and patients.\n\nCourse Objectives\n\nAs a result of this course\, partici
pants will be able to:\n\n Appraise and apply effective communication and
negotiation techniques\, skills and strategies\, while preserving and str
engthening relationships with policy makers &amp\; key decision makers.\n
Understand how different approaches to conflict can influence the negotia
tion process and its outcomes.\n Describe how personal interests and posi
tions influence negotiation dynamics.\n Identify personal strengths and o
pportunities for improving communication and negotiation skills. \n Recog
nize the value of understanding one’s best alternative to a negotiated a
greement (BATNA) and its role in successful negotiation.\n Apply principl
