SUMMARY:Working with simulated patients (Workshop 1 of 2)
DESCRIPTION:‘Working with simulated patients’ Identifying the key strat
egies for training and working with Simulated Patients in healthcare commu
nication teaching\nThis two session online course is aimed at healthcare c
ommunication educators who want to learn more about key strategies for eff
ectively training and working with simulated patients for communication te
aching and assessment. We invite educators with a variety of backgrounds a
nd levels of experience in working with simulated patients to attend the c
ourse. It is highly interactive\, participant-centred and experiential. It
will be facilitated by experienced teachers and simulated patients from E
ACH.\n\nIt is an expectation that participants will attend both linked wor
kshops.\n\nThe course will be held in English and as much as possible will
accommodate participants for whom English is not their first language. We
are aware that institutions in different countries will have varying reso
urces in terms of available teachers\, simulated patients and technology\n
Workshop 1: Focuses on how to train simulated patients (SPs) to deliver sa
fe\, effective and meaningful roleplay experiences for all learners\nBy th
e end of this workshop participants will be able to:\n\n Describe how to
train SPs to realistically portray pre-written and spontaneously developed
patient cases\n Articulate how and why to share the content of communica
tion skills models with simulated patients\n Apply strategies to help SP
’s adapt their portrayal in response to the skills being used by the lea
rner\n Use techniques to enhance SP’s portrayal of emotions\n Train SP
s to provide feedback from the patient’s perspective \n\nWorkshop 2: Fo
cuses on how to train teachers to maximise the potential of simulated pati
ents (SPs)  during experiential teaching\nBy the end of this workshop par
ticipants will be able to:\n\n Identify and manage common challenges that
arise as part of SP roleplay\n Use Agenda-led Outcomes Based Analysis (A
LOBA) to ensure the ‘correct’ level of challenge and flexibility in an
SP roleplay\n Demonstrate how to calibrate the level of emotion in a rol
eplay to meet learners needs\n Guide SP’s to give specific\, descriptiv
e feedback to learners\n Describe the importance of checking in with the
SP before and after a teaching session\n\nFacilitators\nKim Taylor\nSimula
