SUMMARY:tEACH forum - Dealing with Errors and Complaints
DESCRIPTION:tEACH forum - Dealing with Errors and Complaints\nHealthcare pr
ofessionals do not set out to make errors in patient care but despite our
best efforts sometimes errors do occur. Increasingly patients and their fa
milies are being encouraged to speak up and voice their concerns. Whilst m
any hospitals have dedicated staff to deal with formal ‘complaints' trai
ning in communication skills are still required for clinicians to feel con
fident to manage face to face meetings with patients or families in often
emotional circumstances.\n\nIn this one-hour session we are going to explo
re the emotions at play in such face-face meetings and provide strategies
to negotiate high intensity situations in complaints. We will use breakout
rooms to discuss a real-life case and develop learning outcomes for futur
e teaching. We look forward to having you join us!\n\nFacilitator - Profes
sor Peter Gillen\n\nPeter Gillen is an Associate professor of surgery at t
he Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He is a retired general surgeon w
ith a special interest in surgical education. Peter has been Clinical Advi
sor to the National Healthcare Communication Programme in Ireland since 20
 19. This programme was set up in response to the National Patient Experien
ce survey in 2018 which highlighted communication deficits among healthcar
e workers as a major cause of concern. The programme targets specific area
s of communication and is delivered over four modules of training.\n\nThe
session will take place on Zoom. To book your place\, register above:\n\nA
fter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing inform
ation about joining the meeting\n\nThis event is part of a monthly series
organised by tEACH - the teaching subcommittee of EACH.
