SUMMARY:Healthcare Communication Education Research (HCER) webinar - Using
 conversation analysis
DESCRIPTION:Using conversation analysis to examine decision-making in conve
rsations about life-sustaining treatments\nIn her webinar Dr Sterie will p
rovide a short introduction to medical Conversation Analysis. Then\, she w
ill show how she used it to investigate data from a recent project\, consi
sting of audio-recordings of discussions about whether or not a patient sh
ould be resuscitated in case of cardiac arrest. Such discussions take plac
e routinely at the patient's admission to the hospital\, between the physi
cian and the patient. By using this approach she examined phenomena such a
s how physicians ask patients what they desire\, how patients refer to the
relevancy or irrelevancy of life-sustaining treatments\, and ultimately h
ow decision making is accomplished.\n\nFor an overview of study results\,
