SUMMARY:How to Teach: Experiential Communication Skills Teaching
DESCRIPTION:This dynamic two-day workshop is designed to empower educators
in healthcare with practical skills and strategies for teaching communicat
ion effectively. The course emphasizes how to teach—particularly the fac
ilitation of small groups—rather than what to teach or curriculum develo
pment. Participants will engage in hands-on activities\, reflective exerci
ses\, and collaborative learning\, guided by expert facilitators.\n\nPrevi
ous attendees have consistently rated the course as highly valuable and im
pactful.\n\nThis course is ideal for educators involved in teaching health
professionals\, including but not limited to:\n\n Nurses\n Physiotherap
ists\n Doctors\n\nWe welcome participants with varying levels of experien
ce in experiential learning.\n\nBy the end of the course\, participants wi
ll be able to:\n\n Apply educational theory to design effective communica
tion skills training\n Identify key components of successful experiential
  communication sessions\n Integrate role play\, video\, small group work\
, and simulated patients to enhance learning\n Deliver structured feedbac
k that supports learner development\n Manage group dynamics effectively i
n both large and small teaching settings\n\nCOURSE OVERVIEW\nApplying Lear
ning from the “How to Teach” Course\n\nThe skills and insights gained
from this course can be immediately and meaningfully applied in several ar
eas of your teaching practice:\n\nDesigning Effective Learning Sessions\n\
nYou’ll learn how to apply educational theory to structure communication
skills training that is learner-centred and outcome-driven. This means:\n
\n Creating clear learning objectives\n Aligning teaching methods with d
esired outcomes\n Using active learning strategies to engage students\n\n
Example: Instead of delivering a lecture on empathy\, you might design a s
ession where learners explore empathy through role play and reflection\, g
uided by theory such as Kolb’s experiential learning cycle.\n\nFacilitat
ing Small Groups\n\nThe course emphasises facilitation over lecturing. You
’ll gain confidence in:\n\n Leading discussions\n Encouraging particip
ation\n Managing differing opinions and energy levels in a teaching sessi
on\n\nExample: In a small group of nursing students\, you might facilitate
a case-based discussion where learners explore communication challenges w
ith patients who are distressed or non-compliant.\n\nUsing Experiential Me
thods\n\nYou’ll learn how to incorporate tools like:\n\n Role play to s
imulate real-life scenarios\n Video for observation and critique\n Simul
ated patients to practice and refine communication skills\n\nExample: You
could run a session where physiotherapy students practice delivering diffi
cult news to a simulated patient\, followed by peer and facilitator feedba
ck using evidenced based feedback methodology.\n\nGiving Structured Feedba
ck\n\nYou’ll be equipped to provide feedback that is:\n\n Specific\n C
onstructive\n Focused on behaviours rather than personal traits\n\nExampl
e: After a role play\, instead of saying “That was good\,” you might s
ay\, “You maintained eye contact and used open-ended questions\, which h
elped the patient feel heard.”\n\nManaging Group Dynamics\n\nYou’ll de
velop strategies to handle:\n\n Dominant or quiet participants\n Conflic
 t or disengagement\n Time management in group settings\n\nExample: In a m
ixed group of junior doctors and medical students\, you might use structur
ed turn-taking or breakout groups to ensure balanced participation.\n\nCOU
