 nt of effective communication skills is a prerequisite for dental professi
 onals. Skill development requires instruction\, experience and opportuniti
 es to practice communication with patients.  Interest lies in the relatio
 nship between theory and practice in communication skills acquisition\, an
 d whether how and what communication content is taught aligns with how den
 tists practice. This presentation will describe the communications course 
 taught at the Faculty of Dentistry\, University of Toronto\, Canada and ou
 r research on rater assessment and student self-assessment of communicatio
 n skills\, in addition to our development of a program of assessment for t
 eaching and learning communication skills. Future research ideas will also
