SUMMARY:Shared decision making: research & teach (part 1)
DESCRIPTION:The objective of this part of the course is to enable researche
 rs to appraise\, compare\, apply\, justify and interpret SDM research desi
 gns and methodology.\n\nBy the end of the course\, participants will be ab
 le to:\n\n 	Describe the breadth of definitions of SDM (part 1)\n 	Underst
 and the strengths and limitations of using certain research designs and me
 asurement tools\n 	Apply this knowledge to one’s own (proposed) SDM proj
 ect\n\nThe course is directed towards researchers with some background in 
 research on healthcare communication\, and who have some prior knowledge o
 n SDM but wish to explore (other) possible ways to research this topic.\n\
 nParticipation in SDM course part 1 is a prerequisite for this course.\n\n
 Language: The course will be held in English and we will try to accommodat
 e participants for whom English is not their first language.\n\nAs prepara
 tion for part 1 of the course\, participants will be sent a synopsis of th
 e theory and 2-3 papers on SDM. No additional preparation is required for 
 the research course.\nFacilitators\nArwen Pieterse\nAssociate Professor in

 etherlands\nShe was trained as a cognitive psychologist and obtained her P
 hD in 2005\, investigating doctor-patient communication. She was Research 
 fellow of the Dutch Cancer Society (2008-2011). Her most recent research w
 ork relates to doctor/patient treatment preferences\, patient involvement 
 in treatment decision making\, and defining and measuring shared decision 
 making. She received the 2018 Jozien Bensing research award from EACH and 
 has been Associate editor of Patient Education and Counseling since 2017.\
 n\n&nbsp\;\n\nMarleen Kunneman\nSenior Researcher at the LUMC\, The Nether
 lands and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic\, USA\nShe was tr
 ained as a Clinical Linguist and obtained her PhD in Medicine\, focusing o
 n patient-clinician communication and shared decision making (SDM). She ha
 s a special interest in technical versus humanistic approaches of SDM\, me
 asurement with a wink\, burden of patient involvement and making care fit 
 in patients’ lives.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nLeonie Visser\nSenior Researcher at Ka
 rolinska Institutet in Stockholm\, Sweden in collaboration with the Alzhei
 mer center Amsterdam at Amsterdam University Medical Centers\, The Netherl
 ands.\nShe has a background in Medical Psychology and obtained her PhD inv
 estigating medical communication in the oncology setting. Currently\, her 
 research focusses on the memory clinic setting\, and SDM and risk communic
 ation in the context of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.\n\nAnnegrethe 
 Nielsen\nUniversity College Copenhagen\, Denmark\nAnnegrethe Nielsen\, Ph.
 D\, is a senior lecturer at the nursing department at University College C
 openhagen. She has been teaching communication skills to students and prof
 essionals of a variety of healthcare professions for more than 20 years an
 d is a member of the teaching committee of EACH. She is especially interes
 ted in the skills of shared decision making and how to teach and implement
  the skills in professional practice.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nSarah Shepherd\nSenior
  lecturer and lead for the clinical communication programme at Manchester 
 Medical School\, University of Manchester\, UK. She has undertaken researc
 h in Shared Decision Making and doctor patient communication. Currently sh
 e trains educators and teaches communication skills in medical education.\
 n\n&nbsp\;\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nAna Carvajal de la Torre\nFamily Physician at Ser
 vicio Galego de Saude\, Spain. She has been teaching communication skills 
 to postgraduate students\, residents\, and other healthcare professionals 
 for more than 20 years. Member of the teaching committee of EACH. Currentl
 y Ph.D. student on the topic of Shared Decision Making in which she is esp
 ecially interested.\nFull Course\nThe Shared decision making course is a t
 wo part course incorporating this course and the Shared decision making: r
 esearch course.  It is also possible to attend the Shared decision makin
 g: teach course.  Part 1 is a requisite for attending part 2.\n\nPart 1 o
