SUMMARY:Observational Coding of Healthcare Communication
DESCRIPTION:Healthcare interaction is complex\, and obtaining a full grasp
on patient-healthcare professional dynamics is challenging.\n\nSystematic
Coding of Observed human Behavior (SCOBe) is a research method used to unp
ack complex interaction and disentangle specific communication behaviours.
This enables a systematic assessment of behaviours\, such as patients’
question asking or emotional cues\, and clinicians’ information provisio
n or efforts to involve patients in decision making.\n\nThis one and a hal
f day course is developed to help researchers and other professionals in u
sing SCOBe to analyze communication in clinical interaction.\n\nCourse Obj
ectives\n\nThe course will enable participants to:\n\n decide when (and w
hen not) to use SCOBe\n familiarize with and select appropriate coding sy
stems\n apply a coding system through hands-on practice\n modify or newl
y develop existing coding systems if necessary\n analyse and interpret da
ta\n adequately report on research using SCOBE\n avoid common pitfalls w
hen using SCOBe\n\nThis interactive course consists of plenary lectures\,
practical assignments in small groups and individually\, and individualize
d feedback on participants’ research plans. Participants will leave the
course feeling more confident about when and how to apply SCOBe in their o
 wn research.\n\nCOURSE FACILITATORS\n\nJanneke Noordman\, PhD - Nivel\, Ne
therlands Institute for Health Services Research\, The Netherlands.\n\n\nJ
anneke is an expert in observational coding and trained many researchers i
n this methodology. She also provides video-feedback to healthcare provide
rs. She investigates patient-provider communication\, with a focus on part
icipatory research and patient groups in vulnerable situations (e.g. patie
nt with limited health literacy\, elderly). Janneke is the secretary of th
e Patient-Provider-Interaction (PPI) Network in The Netherlands and Flande
rs.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nMarij Hillen\, PhD - Amsterdam University Medical Cente
 rs\, The Netherlands.\n\nMarij studies clinician-patient communication wit
h a focus on patient trust and on (communication about) uncertainty. She f
requently uses SCOBe\, in addition to qualitative\, survey\, and experimen
tal methods. In her research\, she has developed and used observational co
ding to assess communication within second opinion consultations\, shared
 decision-making\, and communication about uncertainty.\n\nAs co-chair of t
he research committee of EACH\, she has developed an online database of co
ding instruments for physician-patient communication. Additionally\, she p
ublished a reporting guideline for SCOBe as well as a systematic review of
  existing coding systems.\n\nCourse Fees:  EACH Member £390 / Non-Member
£430\n\nTo register for this course click on the button below or scan th
