Time – 8.00am EST, 1.00pm GMT

Profile picture of Laura DempsterCommunication is a fundamental component of patient care; therefore, the development of effective communication skills is a prerequisite for dental professionals. Skill development requires instruction, experience and opportunities to practice communication with patients.  Interest lies in the relationship between theory and practice in communication skills acquisition, and whether how and what communication content is taught aligns with how dentists practice. This presentation will describe the communications course taught at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto, Canada and our research on rater assessment and student self-assessment of communication skills, in addition to our development of a program of assessment for teaching and learning communication skills. Future research ideas will also be discussed.
