SUMMARY:ICCH Pre-Conference Course: Influencing Communication in Healthcare
  Policy
DESCRIPTION:Influencing institutional and governmental policy related to co
mmunication in healthcare: Evidence based approaches to communication with
powerbrokers and policy makers\nResearch shows that most patients around
the world do not get humanistic\, patient-centric\, and empathic care resu
lting in poor care with high disease burden despite the availability of ve
ry effective therapies. Members of EACH have contributed heavily to the li
terature that demonstrates how an absence of effective communication has c
ontributed to this deficit. pEACH (Policy &amp\; Practice Committee of EAC
 H) is committed to supporting the implementation of research findings into
effective\, evidence-based practice\, as well as influencing policymakers
to develop humanistic medical practice policies.\n\nInfluencing policy is
challenging\, requiring motivation and skill to effect change. pEACH is d
etermined to educate our members on effective\, efficient\, and evidence-b
ased communication skills\, and providing ready to use resources to engage
policymakers and other key health stakeholders to build a system that can
serve the needs of our patients.\n\nGreat communicators are great negotia
tors\, they resolve seemingly intractable disputes and enhance working rel
ationships. Their negotiation/communication skills determine their effecti
veness as communicators and influencers of policy. EACH members are often
involved in communication and negotiation with an array of stakeholders\,
 including healthcare system governing boards/C-suites/patients/end-users/g
 overnment/health plans/insurance companies/EMR vendors/pharmaceutical comp
anies etc.\n\nThe ability to negotiate requires a collection of interperso
nal and communication skills used together to bring about a desired result
. It is based on exploring underlying interests and positions to bring par
ties together in a constructive way. Effective negotiators use innovative
thinking to create lasting value and forge strong professional relationshi
ps. They take a deep dive in to what motivates and influences differing pe
rspectives to better understand and tackle challenges and disagreements.\n
\nThis 4-hour highly interactive session provides evidence/data-based tool
s/interventions for identifying individual communication preferences/deliv
ery methods/conflict resolution styles\, allowing participants to discover
\, learn and practice the negotiation skills/tools. We will also be includ
ing case-studies\, data from the literature review\, needs assessment\, co
nflict management tools that are useful in negotiation. Evidence-based int
erventions and tools will be discussed &amp\; practiced.\n\nThe pre-course
session focuses on communication with policymakers and managers at govern
ment and level organisation levels\, aiming to influence policy which prom
otes patient safety\, quality\, and satisfaction.\n\nThis course is direct
 ed towards educators\, researchers\, practicing practitioners/health care
providers\,  &amp\; health professional learners at any level (students/p
ostgraduate learners)  who wish to develop skills to achieve desired outc
omes while enhancing relationships with policy makers/power brokers to inf
luence policies/practices focused on clinical communication skills. The co
urse combines large group interactive sessions presenting evidence and con
crete steps in developing specific strategy with small group sessions wher
e participants work on their individual issues and develop plans of action
.\n\nThe course will be held in English and as much as possible will accom
modate participants for whom English is not their first language. We are a
ware that institutions in different countries will have varying resources\
, power structures as well as policy differences and take this into accoun
t in helping you devise strategies for your unique situation. The course w
ill be highly interactive and participant centered and will enable individ
ual participants to formulate concrete plans for the future to help them a
rchive success and enhance satisfaction &amp\; happiness.\n\nThe session w
ill be a dynamic discussion and role-play in small groups with challenges
posed to attendees for group ‘problem-solving’ activities\, to ensure
that attendees meet the needs of our policymakers\, and patients.\nCourse
objectives\nAs a result of this course\, participants will be able to\n\n
Appraise and practice developing effective communication and negotiation
techniques\, skills and strategy while preserving and enhancing the relati
onship with policy makers &amp\; power broker.\n Understand the way one d
eals with conflict can impact negotiation.\n Explain how personal interes
ts and positions influence negotiating.\n Identify personal strengths and
opportunities for improving communication and negotiation skills. \n Rec
